KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 30 — Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) regrets the Malaysia Competition Commission’s (MyCC) decision to penalise General Insurance Association of Malaysia (Piam) and its 22 members for infringing Section 4 of the Competition Act 2010.

In a statement today, BNM said on September 14, 2020, MyCC concluded that Piam and its 22 members had infringed the Act when it had entered into an agreement on the application of trade discounts on parts prices and hourly labour rates for motor vehicle repairs by workshops under the Piam Approved Repairers Scheme.

Besides imposing financial penalties, MyCC had also directed the parties to cease and desist from implementing the agreed parts trade discount and the hourly labour rates, and for such discounts and rates to be determined independently by individual insurers and workshops.

Salt shortage ‘in days’ if iodine condition enforced, warns sundry shop group

PETALING JAYA: An association representing more than 4,000 sundry shop owners has warned of a possible salt shortage “in days” because of Putrajaya’s requirement for iodine to be added to salt from today.

In a statement today, the Federation of Sundry Goods Merchants Association of Malaysia said the entire supply chain did not have enough time to comply with the requirement.

Its president Hong Chee Meng said the health ministry’s statement, issued on Sept 25, said iodine must be added to salt less than 20kg before it could be sold.

“It is very difficult for the market to comply within five days which is a very short notice,” he said, adding manufacturers and importers needed to be given time to comply with the new requirement.

Mr. Mirziyoyev announced a number of initiatives of both regional and global character at this Session. I drew attention to two of them, which directly concern protection consumer rights.

The first one is the establishment of the International Code of Voluntary Commitments of States during pandemics.
According to the President of Uzbekistan, this Code “should reflect each state’s commitments to its citizens and international partners.”
The adoption of such a document would soon contribute not only to the improvement of medical services to the population during pandemics, but also its social status, protection of all its rights and interests, including consumer ones.

The second one is “to adopt a special resolution of the UN General Assembly declaring the Aral Sea region an area of ecological innovation and technologies.”
He calls on the world community to cooperate to turn the region into a zone of environmental innovations and technologies.

SELANGOR: Bekalan air untuk kegunaan domestik dan perindustrian di Selangor cukup sehingga 2065, kata Menteri Besar Selangor..

Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari berkata, jaminan tersebut berdasarkan pembangunan sistem bekalan air bagi mempertingkatkan jumlah sumber melalui Projek Hybrid off River Augmentation System (HORAS) 3000 dan Sungai Rasau.

“Ini kajian kerajaan Selangor berhubung sumber, bekalan dan agihan air negeri ini. Pembangunan bekalan air ini akan melibatkan kos tinggi.

“Hingga Ogos lalu semua empangan mencatatkan kapasiti takungan air melebihi 95 peratus ekoran taburan hujan tinggi di kawasan tadahan,” katanya ketika merasmikan majlis Sambutan Hari Sungai Sedunia 2020 peringkat negeri dan pelancaran Inisiatif Friends of River (FOR) Selangor, semalam.

Rising number of property scams alarms estate agents

PETALING JAYA: Property experts agree the number of housing scams during the movement control order (MCO) and recovery MCO may be higher than reported.

Expressing its concern about the increasing number of property scams and illegal brokers in the industry, the Malaysian Institute of Estate Agents (MIEA) recently noted a 30% increase in the number of complaints received during the MCO and RMCO – most of them from members of the public who have been cheated by illegal brokers.

Speaking to FMT, Siva Shanker, CEO of real estate agency Rahim & Co International, said these complaints are just skimming the surface.

“I’m sure there are many more,” said Shanker.

“Scams and con jobs increase during bad times (as) people prey on fear, insecurity and greed. More people are desperate when times are bad. You sell them a story, they buy the story.”

'Hampir setiap hari tak ada air'

KUALA LUMPUR - [DIKEMAS KINI] Hampir setiap hari sebahagian penduduk Blok 41 Projek Perumahan Rakyat (PPR) Gombak Setia di sini berdepan gangguan air tidak berjadual sejak dua tahun lalu.

Gangguan tidak menentu dihadapi penghuni pintu 17 hingga 24 di semua aras yang ada kalanya berlaku pada waktu pagi, petang atau malam antara dua ke tiga jam dan pernah sehingga sehari.

Penduduk mendakwa keadaan itu semakin kritikal selepas kerja mencuci tangki dilakukan apabila hampir setiap hari penduduk berdepan gangguan air.

Penduduk, Rosnita Abdul Kadir Jailani, 44 berkata, masalah sama berlaku semalam apabila kediamannya di tingkat 13 mengalami gangguan air dari jam 10 malam hingga 7 pagi.

Pontian: Akibat percaya dengan sindiket 'Macau Scam' yang menyamar sebagai wakil Pos Laju, seorang wanita kerugian wang tunai berjumlah RM195,580.

Ketua Polis Daerah Pontian, Superintendan Mustafa Bakri Salleh, berkata mangsa yang berusia 30an itu didakwa menerima panggilan telefon daripada seorang suspek yang mendakwa terdapat bungkusan mengandungi barang miliknya.

Menurutnya, suspek mendakwa bungkusan itu mengandungi kad pengenalan, kad ATM dan buku cek milik mangsa yang dihantar ke alamat di Sabah.

"Suspek memberitahu mangsa bahawa dia terbabit dengan kes pengubahan wang haram dan diarahkan untuk memindahkan sejumlah wang ke dalam beberapa akaun bagi mengelakkan diri dikenakan tindakan.

Kuala Lumpur: Terdapat beberapa petua mengelakkan setiap individu yang mempunyai simpanan dalam Kumpulan Wang Simpanan Pekerja (KWSP) dan institusi kewangan lain daripada terpedaya dengan scammer menawarkan pelaburan tipu.

Pakar kewangan Islam dan fintech, Muhamad Fahmi Mustafa berkata, semua individu mesti ada konsep Know Yourself (KYS) dan di setiap institusi kewangan mengunakan kaedah KYC untuk mengesahkan identiti dan kesesuaian seseorang sebelum diterima sebagai pelanggan.

"Sebagai individu kita mesti ada konsep KYS. Kita mesti tahu kedudukan kewangan kita. Ini termasuk jumlah pinjaman, baki duit dalam bank, kad kredit, di mana anda pergi dan sebagainya. Ketahui informasi barangan milik anda, contohnya kereta dan rumah.

"Dengan keadaan anda yang selalu siap siaga, anda tidak akan mudah cemas jika berdepan scammer. Muat turun aplikasi scam filter di telefon anda. Aplikasi seperti Truecaller sangat penting as first line of defence atau pertahanan awal untuk mengelakkan anda memulakan komunikasi dengan scammer.

Penjualan garam beriodin dikuatkuasakan

Kuala Lumpur: Mulai Rabu depan, semua garam halus atau garam beratnya 20 kilogram atau kurang akan diwajibkan menambah iodin sebelum boleh dijual di pasaran Malaysia.

Ketua Pengarah Kesihatan Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah berkata, peraturan baru itu susulan pindaan Peraturan 285 berkaitan Garam Halus Beriodin atau Garam Beriodin di bawah Peraturan-Peraturan Makanan 1985 yang diwartakan pada 12 November 2018.

"Pindaan peraturan ini susulan daripada hasil dapatan Tinjauan Gangguan Akibat Kekurangan Iodin (IDD) Kebangsaan yang menunjukkan 48.2 peratus kanak-kanak sekolah rendah berumur lapan hingga 10 tahun mengalami masalah kekurangan iodin.

"Selain itu, 2.1 peratus kanak-kanak mengalami masalah goiter. Bagi tinjauan membabitkan wanita hamil dan murid sekolah, pengambilan iodin juga tidak mencapai paras optimum.

"Oleh itu, pelaksanaan Pengiodinan Secara Universal di Malaysia (USI) dapat membantu meningkatkan pengambilan iodin dalam kalangan masyarakat memandangkan garam adalah bahan asas yang digunakan di semua peringkat lapisan masyarakat tanpa mengira status pendapatan," katanya.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 25 — Malaysia has recently introduced the Jendela plan which aims to boost connectivity nationwide especially in rural areas.

The initial target of rolling out 5G in Q3 2020 has taken a back seat as the government is now prioritising improvements of existing 4G networks.

An improved 4G coverage would serve as a strong foundation to ensure that 5G can be rolled out in an efficient and effective manner.

One of the key targets is to expand 4G population coverage from 91.8 per cent to 96.9 per cent within phase 1 of Jendela (2020-2022). Responding to our queries on spectrum, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has told us that all service providers will have to expand their coverage with their existing resource.
