A TOTAL of RM300,000 was given away as prizes to 518 winners of the 16th Consumerism Contest. 
 
The prize-giving ceremony was held at Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang (MAEPS), Serdang.
 
The competition, which ran from January to the end of August, gained positive response from the community, especially from students.
 
The annual contest, organised by the Federation of Malaysian Consumers Association (Fomca) together with the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry, received 125,201 entries this year.
 
 
A colouring contest was also held which saw the participation of 22,115 kindergarten children and primary school pupils.
 
SMK Abdul Jalil Johor emerged winners in the category of most number of entries by a secondary school while SJK(T) Batu Caves Selangor was the winning primary school.
 
Other schools with high number of entries were SJK(C) Sin Chone, Terengganu and SK Sultan Hisamudin Alam Shah, Kuala Lumpur.
 
Fomca president Datuk Dr Marimuthu Nadason said, “We want to teach schoolchildren about their rights so that they grow up to be educated consumers.”
 
A number of activities were also held that day including a colouring contest, a consumerism exhibition and a talk by Sirim QAS International Sdn Bhd.
