KUALA LUMPUR, April 5 (Bernama) -- The Federation of Malaysian Consumer Associations (Fomca) today lauded the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry's move to amend the Direct Sales
Act 1993 to combat direct sales scams.

Fomca secretary-general Muhammad Sha'ani Abdullah said the amendment would also provide protection to consumers from being cheated by those involved in direct sales, scratch-and-win, pyramid scheme and
multi-level-marketing activities.

At the same time, Fomca also called for the amendment of the Companies Act 1965 (Act 125) as most of the scams were conducted by those masquerading as a trustworthy companies registered with the Companies
Commission of Malaysia, he told Bernama here Monday.

Muhammad Sha'ani was commenting on Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob's remarks yesterday that the ministry would be amending the act to protect consumers from becoming victims of people who attempt to maximise profit from direct sales.

He said the draft of the amended act had been approved by the Attorney-General's Chambers and would be submitted to the Cabinet meeting next week.

Meanwhile, Muslim Consumers Association of Malaysia (PPIM) advisory committee member Dr Ahmad Zaki Ismail said the ministry should set up a committee, comprising authorities like police and Housing and Local
Government Ministry personnel, to combat such fraud activities effectively.
