KUALA LUMPUR: Petronas has formed a smart partnership with the Federation of Malaysian Consumers Association (Fomca) to educate the public on their spending habits as a means of weathering the current global economic crisis, said Petronas vice-president (corporate services) Ahmad Nizam Salleh.

The campaign would not only be focused on schools and institutions but also include the public, to derive long-term benefits in educating and creating awareness among consumers.

“The best way to tackle the economic crisis is by changing the mindset of consumers to make wise decisions.

“Petronas’ decision to support Fomca’s initiative was also part of our corporate social responsibility,” he told reporters Saturday.

Fomca president Datuk Marimuthu Nadason said the month-long campaign themed “Change Begins With Me” was aimed at creating awareness among the people of Malaysia to face eventualities like a price increase in consumer products due to an increase in oil prices.

“Through the campaign we hope to encourage consumers to look at their own lifestyle and spending habits as well as conserving the usage of electricity and water,” said Marimuthu. -- Bernama
